Constructional Timber
What does FORT stock?
- C24 timber in different widths, thicknesses and lengths for any specification.
- "Home-grown" C16 timber offering a cost-effective, more eco-friendly and better treated option.
- All stock lines stored on racks to ensure timber kept as dry and flat/straight as possible.
- Expert team can advise on what is best for your needs.
From battening out a roof with something as small as 25mm x 38mm, through to 75mm x 225mm C24 carcassing for trusses, FORT stocks it all!
There is a common misconception that C24 is vastly superior to C16, however when you consider the pros and cons, you may come to a different conclusion!
The critical difference in structural performance between the two grades is the difference in "span". This refers to how far the length of timber can span unsupported between joists. Although C24 is more expensive then C16, the difference in span is minimal, especially when you consider the standard length of floor joists.
C16 performs just well in every other situation. Apart from the performance, there are other factors to consider. Price: C16 can be around 10% (or more) less expensive. Treatment: due to the nature of the raw timber normally used in C24 productions, it is harder to treat to UC3, meaning C24, can only be used when covered (see below), whereas all of FORT's C16 stock is UC3. Product miles: timber is renewable, and therefore a very "green" method of building. Given that C16 is mostly grown, cut and treated within the UK, it does an awful lot less miles to get into our yard. Quality: Due to the speed at which it grows, C16 contains less fibre in volume terms (you can see the annular rings on the end are further apart); this means that C16 material has a higher tendency to bow and twist. The easy answer is to fix it in place promptly.
Timber Treatment
There are 2 main ways to preservative treat timber (double vacuum and high pressure vacuum). Constructional timber is almost always treated under high pressure vacuum. The advantage is that it is more robust, but it does slightly distort the timber profile. It usually has a green tinge due to the copper in the chemical mix.
There are 4 basic grades of preservative treatment (you can get higher for items such as bridges and motorway fencing). They are called User Classes (UC). We've set out below how they work;
Timber Treatment - UC1
UC1 treatment is the lowest grade achievable. It offers minimal protection against rot, damp and insects. UC1 timber should only be used when it is completely protected from the elements.
Uses: Floor trusses, internal studwork.
Timber Treatment - UC2
Probably the most common form of treatment; user class 2 should only be used when there is a minimal risk of the timber getting wet. It should not be used if the timber will be exposed/used externally for any length of time. This is why all of our UC2 timber is fully covered from the elements.
Uses: Roof trusses, floor joists, external stud walls and most constructional situations.
Timber Treatment - UC3
User class 3 allows timber to be used in all the areas where UC2 is permitted, as well as fully external conditions, above ground. We keep a full range in all the usual sizes, which allows you to work on whatever the weather! Generally (as mentioned above), UC3 is only available on C16, so not only does it offer superior protection, it can also save you money!
Uses: Shed building, deck joists, pergolas, fencing, etc.
Timber Treatment - UC4
For ground to air contact situations, UC4 treatment is needed; the greatest area of harm to wood is when it's in contact with soil (and to a certain extent water). The ground to air contact point is where the bugs, fungus and other elements gather easily and attack the timber.
It would be very rare that constructional timber is treated to UC4, as it is only required when the timber is in contact with the ground. All of our sleepers and posts are treated to UC4, meaning you can be confident in their lifespan.
Uses: Only used in landscaping, for fence posts & sleepers.
Constructional Timber: what can FORT offer?
- Long & wide lengths/sizes, in small quantities or packs.
- "Finger jointed" lengths for superior strength - these allow longer lengths to be achieved with equal/superior strength.
- Roof & floor trusses taken off plan for specific builds.
- Glulam beams from a certified manufacturer.
